What Is a Guardian Dog?

And why we believe it’s the most ethical way to breed

At Beach View Doodles, we’re proud to raise our dogs with love, respect, and purpose. One of the ways we uphold these values is through our Guardian Home Programme — a model we believe represents the most ethical and responsible path for conscientious dog breeding.

What Is a Guardian Dog?

Great question — and one I love to answer, because the guardian home model is at the heart of how I breed dogs and why I do it the way I do.

A guardian dog is one of our breeding dogs who lives full-time with a loving family, not in a kennel. These dogs are placed in carefully selected homes where they are treated as cherished family members. They live normal, happy lives — playing in the garden, cuddling up on the sofa, going on adventures, and forming strong bonds with their people.

While they are part of our breeding programme, they only return to us temporarily for health testing, breeding, or to raise a litter. After their breeding career ends (which is short and carefully managed), they are spayed or neutered and remain with their guardian family forever.

Why We Choose This Model

Honestly, the guardian programme is something I feel really strongly about, and here’s why:

  • This one’s simple — our dogs are family dogs first. Labradoodles and Sheepadoodles are affectionate, intelligent, and people-loving companions. They belong on the sofa, snuggled up and enjoying belly rubs — not in kennels or runs. I never want to be in a position where I have more dogs than I can personally love, train, and give daily attention to. The guardian model ensures every dog gets that one-on-one family life. No dog is ever just one of many — they’re someone’s whole world.
  • It keeps my breeding programme small, personal, and ethical. Instead of having lots of dogs on-site, I work with a handful of amazing guardian families who share my values. This lets me focus on the quality of care for each dog and each litter — never quantity.
  • It’s a true partnership. I stay super connected with my guardian homes, and they become part of my extended dog family. I get to watch these dogs grow up in loving homes, and the families get to be part of something meaningful. It’s a win-win.
  • The dogs are happier this way. And that’s the bottom line. Breeding should never come at the expense of a dog’s happiness or well-being. This programme allows us to grow our programme responsibly without compromising what matters most: the dogs themselves — because their happiness, health, and well-being are always my top priority.

We’re grateful to the amazing families who partner with us as guardian homes, and we’re always happy to talk to prospective guardians or puppy buyers about how the programme works. If you’re curious about becoming a guardian home or just want to learn more about our approach, please feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to share what I believe in — because at the end of the day, it’s all about raising incredible dogs in the most respectful, loving way possible.

At Beach View Doodles, we’re not just focused on raising amazing Labradoodles and Sheepadoodles — we’re just as committed to making sure every dog lives a full, happy, and enriched life. That’s why the guardian model means so much to us.
